There are some incredible cities in the world, and though the likes of London, Paris, Berlin and Barcelona might be amongst some of the most popular choices for a city break, there are some fascinating and unique destinations out there if you look hard enough. We’ve selected five of the most beautiful cities in Africa to make your next trip a truly memorable one.
This will probably come as no surprise to seasoned travelers, but Marrakesh, one of the largest cities in Morocco, is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Africa. It’s really not hard to see why either! It takes its name from “Land of God”, though is often referred to as the Red City and is famous for its Djemaa el Fnar Square, home to an abundance of street performers and vendors. Follow the scent of the spices through the city’s winding streets, taking in all the sights, sounds and smells of this incredible city. Sandwiched between the Atlas Mountains and the Sahara desert, you won’t be short of some incredible scenery either!
Kenya is famous for its fantastic safaris, but there’s far more to this fascinating country than just wildlife, and its largest and capital city Nairobi is well worth a visit after you’ve finished trailing lions, elephants and zebra. Some of the city’s highlights include the Nairobi National Museum which provides a fascinating insight into the history of the capital, and the Kazuri Factory – a great place to pick up souvenirs, Of course, if it’s all about the animals, you can even spot lions, hippos and rhinos at the Nairobi National Park.
Port Louis, Mauritius
A favorite amongst honeymooners, Mauritius is a real gem in the Indian Ocean and its capital of Port Louis is well worth a visit. Though the city is very busy and a popular business hub throughout the day, the city transforms into a peaceful paradise when the sun goes down, with market places and the Caudan waterfront offering the perfect setting for an evening with friends and family. There are also plenty of historical buildings dotted around the city, which provide visitors with an insight into the national culture.
Cape Town, South Africa
If you needed to ask the question, ‘Why travel to South Africa?’ then Cape Town would be your answer! It’s South Africa’s second largest city, and is home to some incredible beaches, imposing mountains, exquisite wine and a buzzing nightlife scene. Though there’s plenty to see and do in this vibrant and colorful city, Cape Town’s main attraction is undoubtedly its Table Mountain. Take the cable car to the top and you’ll be rewarded with a breath-taking panoramic view of the city. If you’re feeling adventurous, you could even abseil back down again with one of the city’s approved organisations.
The Madagascan capital has plenty of historical sites to offer tourists, but its major draw is its spectacular sunsets, which are truly incredible. Though it’s a little difficult to navigate at times due to its steep roads, Antananarivo is a great choice for travelers as there are plenty of beaches and palaces to explore too.
